mara hruby

First heard of Mara Hruby when Big K.R.I.T. posted a picture of the two of them chillin’ outside of Atlanta’s premiere recording studio, Tree Sound.  With the mention of Tree Sound came the peaked curiosity of what they may be creating together and, more importantly, who the young lady could be.  After doing a little research, I discovered From Her Eyes, the 7-track EP from the Oakland, Ca. native.  A beautiful surprise, Hruby transforms her favorite male artists’ popular songs into a work that could (almost) be claimed as her own.  From D’Angelo’s “Send It On” to Van Hunt’s “Character,” the young singer seemingly takes ownership of every lyric and remixed melody, creating tunes from her perspective.

She has a new EP, Archaic Rapture, set to be released March 18th.  Until then, get familiar with her by checking out her cover of Andre Benjamin’s “Take Off Your Cool.”

DJ Rahdu - Follow Me

DJ Rahdu has done it again.  He’s compiled some of the hottest remixes, covers & tribute pieces as a sort of ode to D’Angelo.  While we wait [im]patiently for the full return of the R&B Jesus, this project is a nice stand-in to hold us over in the meantime.

Big, big thanks to the folks over at Funk It for graciously sharing this gem with the Internets!

Here’s a lil’ something to whet your palate while you anxiously await for your download to complete.

*sigh*  It should be pretty clear that I’m crazy about this man.  D’Angelo stops in Paris at Le Zenith and blesses the crowd with the undisputable fan favorite, “Untitled (How Does It Feel?)”.  After watching this clip and hearing that soulful, passionate voice, I can definitively state, “It feels damn good.”  Although his performance isn’t as steamy as the music video, the raw passion is still there.  With just his piano and his vocals, it’s the closest we’ll get to appreciating D’Angelo’s stripped vulnerability (for now–hopefully).

Enjoy.

After many years of lingering anticipation, neo soul trailblazer D’Angelo has finally returned.  And he’s showing up and showing out like he’s never left.  R&B Jesus is currently touring 11 cities in Europe and, judging from the footage, KILLING each inch of the stage.

What I found below…jammin’.  D’Angelo converts the classic “Brown Sugar” into a funked out jam session riddled in Prince/Morris Day & The Time-inspiration.  I was about to hit “The Bird” and everythang.

I’m looking forward to when he makes it back to the States.  I don’t know about y’all, but I’ve been waiting for 12 years for the resurrection of R&B Soul.
