My apologies, this review is long overdue.  But to those of you that have no clue about this project, it’ll be right on time.  Amerigo Gazaway returns with a very seminal project, one that will continue to shape the format of the evolving mash-up.  From his Soul Mates series, Yasiin Gaye: The Departure (Side One) is the undeniable union of the divided soul singer Marvin Gaye and the artist formerly known as Mos Def, Yasiin Bey.  If you weren’t a believer in soul mates, this pairing will dispel your disbelief.  The Departure blends the two artists so seamlessly, it’s as if they were creating simultaneously in the studio.

Bizarre-Tribe-Access-Denied-300x300

“Industry rule #4080: record company people are shady.”  Q-Tip hipped folks to this many moons ago and we’re still witnessing the greed and misappropriation of our (hip hop) culture from huge record labels.  I’m a fan of Gummy Soul and Amerigo Gazaway.  They’ve proven themselves as innovators and risk takers.  They recently released Gazaway’s mash-up Bizarre Tribe, a conceptual meeting of A Tribe Called Quest and The Pharcyde hits.  An incredibly familiar but original idea, Bizarre Tribe is a classic hip hop head’s wet dream.  Apparently, Sony has caught wind and wants some of the pie.  Sony sent a cease and desist letter to the producers to stop distributing the free project.  WTF??  Read Gummy Soul’s informative, hell-yeah worthy retort below. Last year, a very dope mashup of Fela Kuti and De La Soul hits, Fela Soul, was brought to us by the extremely creative mind of Amerigo Gazaway of Gummy Soul.  This year, Gazaway has harnested that same intense energy to produce a mashup of The Pharcyde and A Tribe Called Quest, Bizarre Tribe: A Quest to The PharcydeSet to drop on the anniversary of the release of Fela Soul, September 13, there’s no doubt that something spectacular is on the horizon.  Enjoy a little sample of what’s to come.
