the big payback amerigo gazaway

I honestly cannot get enough of Amerigo Gazaway.  He has consistently dropped exceptional projects, chiseling out a body of work that is undeniably his own.  His latest mashup comes from the “The Big Payback” tribute mix series, which featured “The 45’s” by DJ Scratch and “The Legacy of JB” by J.PeriodAmerigo Gazaway’s “J.B. and The Soul Mates” is a mean re-conceptualization of James Brown’s funkiness paired with artists who have felt the influence of The Godfather in some form.  Download it here and listen below.

Yasiin Gaye

My apologies, this review is long overdue.  But to those of you that have no clue about this project, it’ll be right on time.  Amerigo Gazaway returns with a very seminal project, one that will continue to shape the format of the evolving mash-up.  From his Soul Mates series, Yasiin Gaye: The Departure (Side One) is the undeniable union of the divided soul singer Marvin Gaye and the artist formerly known as Mos Def, Yasiin Bey.  If you weren’t a believer in soul mates, this pairing will dispel your disbelief.  The Departure blends the two artists so seamlessly, it’s as if they were creating simultaneously in the studio.

Yasiin Gaye

Y’all.  Okayplayer just dropped some heavy, heavy news.  I’m talmbout so heavy, it’ll make your head spin from the weight of it all.  Amerigo Gazaway, returns to reign majestically with an epic fusion from his new series “Soul Mates”–Yasiin Gaye.

Building the album’s foundation from deconstructed samples of Gaye’s Motown classics, Gazaway re-orchestrates the instrumentation into new productions within a similar framework. Carefully weaving Bey’s dense raps and Gaye’ soulful vocals over his new arrangements, the producer delivers a quality far closer to Gaye’s famous duets than that of a “mashup” album.

Yes, that’s the mighty Mos, now known as Yasiin Bey and the Soul Gawd Marvin Gaye.  As one.  Together.  The full project will drop on February 25th but you can listen to the track below and download it here.

Xiomara

Amerigo Gazaway, formerly of Gummy Soul, presents a very sultry Cali songstress by the name of Xiomara.  Ms. Lady takes covers to a whole new level with her bluesy renditions of Outkast’s “So Fresh, So Clean” and A Tribe Called Quest’s “Electric Relaxation” in A Tribe Called Outkast: A Tribute.  Transforming the original songs into smoothed out, ultra-melodic tracks, Xiomara’s sound is reminiscent of a sexy night at an underground speakeasy.  Get into it under the cut.

Bizarre-Tribe-Access-Denied-300x300

“Industry rule #4080: record company people are shady.”  Q-Tip hipped folks to this many moons ago and we’re still witnessing the greed and misappropriation of our (hip hop) culture from huge record labels.  I’m a fan of Gummy Soul and Amerigo Gazaway.  They’ve proven themselves as innovators and risk takers.  They recently released Gazaway’s mash-up Bizarre Tribe, a conceptual meeting of A Tribe Called Quest and The Pharcyde hits.  An incredibly familiar but original idea, Bizarre Tribe is a classic hip hop head’s wet dream.  Apparently, Sony has caught wind and wants some of the pie.  Sony sent a cease and desist letter to the producers to stop distributing the free project.  WTF??  Read Gummy Soul’s informative, hell-yeah worthy retort below. It’s here!  It’s here!:  The perfect union of a few of hip hop’s greatest and proudest moments.  Gummy Soul’s Amerigo Gazaway returns with a thoughtful and innovative mashup of the jazzy goodness of A Tribe Called Quest and the eclectic lyricism of The Pharcyde with Bizarre Tribe: A Quest to The PharcydeQuestlove calls the mashup, “brilliant”; Okayplayer raves, “Two great flavors that tastes great together”; NPR sends its praises, “Gummy Soul producer Amerigo Gazaway makes his ingredients sound as if they were born to be together”; Audio Gumbo rhapsodized, “Amerigo Gazaway lives up to the high expectations that the creation of Fela Soul put in place.  He does mashups very well.”  Under the cut, you can download and listen to put in your two cents.
