Every so often, you have to do something specifically for yourself. Forget costs, hindrances, obligations, whatever. I’ve never travelled to another state STRICTLY for music.   Considering that I love music and traveling, this trip has been a long time coming.  There was at least one “festival” that I’ve been feenin’ to go to so I made it happen. The 6th Annual Roots Picnic is being held on June 1st in Philly and I’m hype as hell that I get to experience it. Never seen The Roots live so I expect that to be the highlight of my trip.

Anyway, I’d like to share my enthusiasm with y’all. If you’re interested attended vicariously, I’ll be live tweeting the show to put y’all as close as you can get via the innanets. Follow me @ohsowrite, if you’re not already. The tweeting will start around 12pm EST. I’ll be using hashtags #RootsPicnic and #AudioGumbo so follow along!

In the meantime, vibe out to this dope mixtape by producer Cosmo Baker. It features sounds from every artist scheduled to perform on Saturday.

…And another one.  This time Robert Glasper is joined by everyone’s favorite DJ/drummer/producer/music aficionado Questlove.  Accompanied by The Roots and the sultry voice of Solange, “Twice,” a Little Dragon cover, is 9 minutes of passion and vitality.  I’m getting more excited with every share from Black Radio Recovered: The Remix EP.  Make sure you cop that on Oct. 9.

It’s been a while, but Solange Knowles has returned with a new jam, “Losing You.”  Filmed in Cape Town, South Africa, the fierce fashionista frolics with her equally stylish cohorts, all while musing over a seemingly lost love.  The video and the song lyrics are quite contradictory (or maybe not).  The lyrics bemoan the struggles of a floundering relationship while the video is bright, playful, celebratory and perhaps, even mocking.  And the clothes!  Solange and company are styled, head to toe, in beautiful wares.  On filming “Losing You,” Solange tells Pitchfork:

When Melina [Matsoukas] and I decided to film ‘Losing You’ in South Africa, we really didn’t have a real firm concept in place. It was sort of a grab a camera and let’s go moment. I knew I wanted to capture a couple things: the vibe of our friendship and all of the crazy escapades we’ve gotten ourselves into all over the world, and the abstract and elegant Le Sape Society (Society for the Advancement of People of Elegance) formed in the Congo which was documented by Daniele Tamagni in his Gentleman of Bacongo book.  We called Daniele to guide us, and some of my friends from New York came down to Cape Town and we all had a very damn good time.

Get into the very dope video after the jump.  The track is out digitally and will be released on vinyl on Nov. 6.

Some of the best news I’ve heard this week, the official release of Robert Glasper’s Black Radio Recovered: The Remix EP drops on Oct. 9.  Glasper’s most recent release, Black Radio (still in heavy rotation, btw), is a beautiful melding of jazz, hip hop and soul, so there’s no doubt that The Remix EP will maintain that same level of genre intermixing.  With production credits from 9th Wonder, ?uestlove and Georgia Anne Muldrow, additional vocal stylings from talents such as Phonte, Black Milk and Solange Knowles, this reworking should be well worth the anticipation.  Check out the tracklisting and lil’ performance from The Robert Glasper Experiment with the lovely Lalah Hathaway under the cut.
