Every Friday someone asks me, “what’s happ’nin’ this weekend??”  This will be the place for you to find out.  If you have an event you’d like to submit to be featured, email me with the subject “Event Submission.”  I’ll feature it, along with other events happening within the same time frame. If it’s particularly dope, I’ll feature a more detailed write-up of your event.

(Right now, most events featured will be in Atlanta, since that’s my base.  I’m open to events country and world-wide though!)

cadillacs in space

This joint is one of the reasons Audio Gumbo is here: to bring a funky alternative to what you’re used to.  Cadillacs In Space is a supergroup of extraterrestrial talent. Robyn the Bank, Aleon Craft and Shy Carter combined their cool ass writing, rapping, singing and producing skills to create an experience that will shake you up and turn you out.  “Autopilot (hollywood & highland)” brings some Southern cool mixed with some Cali heat.  Quick-paced and full of attitude, “Autopilot” is summertime ready.  Check out the song and video after the jump.

Yasiin Gaye

My apologies, this review is long overdue.  But to those of you that have no clue about this project, it’ll be right on time.  Amerigo Gazaway returns with a very seminal project, one that will continue to shape the format of the evolving mash-up.  From his Soul Mates series, Yasiin Gaye: The Departure (Side One) is the undeniable union of the divided soul singer Marvin Gaye and the artist formerly known as Mos Def, Yasiin Bey.  If you weren’t a believer in soul mates, this pairing will dispel your disbelief.  The Departure blends the two artists so seamlessly, it’s as if they were creating simultaneously in the studio.

A clear penchant for diversity and experimentation, singer José James returns with this electronic-rock jam, “EveryLittleThing.”  The singer will debut his third album, While You Were Sleeping, on June 10th.  The album will feature similar songs infused with the influence of Jimi Hendrix and Nirvana.  Should be nice!

SZA - Warm Winds

I’ve been diggin’ the young TDE crooner as of late.  SZA‘s mellow, laid back persona is hypnotic, as beautifully displayed in her new video “Warm Winds.”  Fellow TDE label mate Isaiah Rashad lends his equally cool presence and vocals to the track.  The visual matches the song’s melancholic tone with somber hues and disconnected scenes.

SZA just released her latest project Z, which is available here.  Get into the video under the cut.

mara hruby

First heard of Mara Hruby when Big K.R.I.T. posted a picture of the two of them chillin’ outside of Atlanta’s premiere recording studio, Tree Sound.  With the mention of Tree Sound came the peaked curiosity of what they may be creating together and, more importantly, who the young lady could be.  After doing a little research, I discovered From Her Eyes, the 7-track EP from the Oakland, Ca. native.  A beautiful surprise, Hruby transforms her favorite male artists’ popular songs into a work that could (almost) be claimed as her own.  From D’Angelo’s “Send It On” to Van Hunt’s “Character,” the young singer seemingly takes ownership of every lyric and remixed melody, creating tunes from her perspective.

She has a new EP, Archaic Rapture, set to be released March 18th.  Until then, get familiar with her by checking out her cover of Andre Benjamin’s “Take Off Your Cool.”
