I’m excited to announce our new Audio Gumbo weekly feature, Throw it in the Pot. A strictly sonic version of the website, TiitP will showcase a blend of genres all over the indie scene. Make sure you like Audio Gumbo on Facebook for updates on downloading the podcasts! The first episode is dedicated to the sounds and culture of New Orleans. Since it’s Fat Tuesday, today just makes sense to drop this mix. The music in New Orleans is rich in culture and soul–jazz and blues, brass bands, second line parades, bounce music–and it all derives from the retention of African tradition, music and fellowship found in the historical Congo Square. The tracks on this episode are wide-ranging but all reflective of a city that’s booming in the spirit of good times. The artists featured throughout are New Orleans natives and transplants, influencers and admirers. Enjoy and leave feedback! (more…)

Hear This: A Tribe Called Outkast: A Tribute x Xiomara
Posted: January 13, 2014 in Alternative, Blues, Hear This, Hip Hop, Jazz, SoulTags: A Tribe Called Outkast, A Tribe Called Quest, Amerigo Gazaway, Electric Relaxation, Outkast, So Fresh So Clean, Xiomara
Amerigo Gazaway, formerly of Gummy Soul, presents a very sultry Cali songstress by the name of Xiomara. Ms. Lady takes covers to a whole new level with her bluesy renditions of Outkast’s “So Fresh, So Clean” and A Tribe Called Quest’s “Electric Relaxation” in A Tribe Called Outkast: A Tribute. Transforming the original songs into smoothed out, ultra-melodic tracks, Xiomara’s sound is reminiscent of a sexy night at an underground speakeasy. Get into it under the cut.

Every so often, you have to do something specifically for yourself. Forget costs, hindrances, obligations, whatever. I’ve never travelled to another state STRICTLY for music. Considering that I love music and traveling, this trip has been a long time coming. There was at least one “festival” that I’ve been feenin’ to go to so I made it happen. The 6th Annual Roots Picnic is being held on June 1st in Philly and I’m hype as hell that I get to experience it. Never seen The Roots live so I expect that to be the highlight of my trip.
Anyway, I’d like to share my enthusiasm with y’all. If you’re interested attended vicariously, I’ll be live tweeting the show to put y’all as close as you can get via the innanets. Follow me @ohsowrite, if you’re not already. The tweeting will start around 12pm EST. I’ll be using hashtags #RootsPicnic and #AudioGumbo so follow along!
In the meantime, vibe out to this dope mixtape by producer Cosmo Baker. It features sounds from every artist scheduled to perform on Saturday.
