QUEEN

When I say this collaboration is highly anticipated, believe that’s no exaggeration. Since the release of Janelle Monae’s first EP Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase), folks have compared and contrasted her style to her eclectic predecessor, Erykah Badu. So it’s only natural that once the comparisons finally waned, fans would begin to clamor for a melding of their individual dopeness. But you know what they say: Ask and you shall receive, y’all!

The first single, Q.U.E.E.N, from Monae’s upcoming album, Electric Lady, is fiercely unapologetic. Lines such as, “They be like ‘ooh, let them eat cake’, but we eat wangs and throw them bones on the ground” reflect the sassiness and slightly unruly message of this track. Badu acts as more of the big sister proudly backing up her fearless lil’ sis than a true feature. Quite honestly, Monae holds her own and dominates the song. There are some that ponder about the lyrics, questioning her sexuality and intent. To me, her only intent is the stress the same philosophy she’s upheld since she dropped down from Metropolis: “embrace what makes you unique; even if it makes others uncomfortable.”

…And another one.  This time Robert Glasper is joined by everyone’s favorite DJ/drummer/producer/music aficionado Questlove.  Accompanied by The Roots and the sultry voice of Solange, “Twice,” a Little Dragon cover, is 9 minutes of passion and vitality.  I’m getting more excited with every share from Black Radio Recovered: The Remix EP.  Make sure you cop that on Oct. 9.

You may or may not be familiar with the name Kameron Corvet, but thanks to his recent appearance on The Voice, he’s almost a household name.  Based out of Atlanta, Kameron’s smooth tone is not to be taken lightly.  I’ve seen the brother perform live; he’s got quite a voice (take that, Cee-lo, Christina, Blake and Adam!).  Check out his new joint, “There Is No Tomorrow,” and judge for yourself.

The first official single from Big Boi’s upcoming album Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors is in.  “Mama Told Me” is a funky track produced by The Flush Music and features Kelly Rowland on the chorus.  As always, General Patton laces the track with sharp wit and boastful wordplay: “Living legend, rap scholar, art major/Cuz I make major art, like Beethoven, Van Gogh or Mozart, so don’t start.”  I dig it, but I can’t lie.  I prefer the version with Yukimi and Little Dragon.  You can implement your own compare/contrast methods after the cut.

It’s been a while, but Solange Knowles has returned with a new jam, “Losing You.”  Filmed in Cape Town, South Africa, the fierce fashionista frolics with her equally stylish cohorts, all while musing over a seemingly lost love.  The video and the song lyrics are quite contradictory (or maybe not).  The lyrics bemoan the struggles of a floundering relationship while the video is bright, playful, celebratory and perhaps, even mocking.  And the clothes!  Solange and company are styled, head to toe, in beautiful wares.  On filming “Losing You,” Solange tells Pitchfork:

When Melina [Matsoukas] and I decided to film ‘Losing You’ in South Africa, we really didn’t have a real firm concept in place. It was sort of a grab a camera and let’s go moment. I knew I wanted to capture a couple things: the vibe of our friendship and all of the crazy escapades we’ve gotten ourselves into all over the world, and the abstract and elegant Le Sape Society (Society for the Advancement of People of Elegance) formed in the Congo which was documented by Daniele Tamagni in his Gentleman of Bacongo book.  We called Daniele to guide us, and some of my friends from New York came down to Cape Town and we all had a very damn good time.

Get into the very dope video after the jump.  The track is out digitally and will be released on vinyl on Nov. 6.

I can always go for a good mashup and a funky refix.  Brought to us by DJ J. Period and Oakland duo Zion I, Little Dragon’s “Ritual Union” gets a bomb ass, dub-plate makeover.  Fittingly so, J. Period and Zion I have teamed up to drop Bomb First, a mixtape to precede the Oct. 2 release of Zion I’s Shadowboxing.  The refix to Little Dragon’s smash hit maintains the quirkiness of the original while the Cali duo infuse it with their own brand of high energy.

And I’d have to agree with the homieAfter proving to folks that he’s a Southern “rap nigga” that can, in fact, rap, Big Sant is back with bold braggadocio.  Produced by Kreatev, the track possesses an equally audacious sound

If you’re searching for a mellow, laidback groove, this is it.  Producer King I Divine returns with “Fly,” an ethereal trip on the wings of LD Henriquez’s soft, captivating vocals.  Stay tuned for his new album, Cloud 127, which will continue with the vibe of mellifluousness.

Muhsinah just dropped some new hot shit from her upcoming free EP Dear____.  “Goodbye,” written, composed, arranged and produced by Muhsinah, encompasses her usual sensual vocals and a funky-electro, supernatural vibe.  It’s a very cool kiss-off song.

If you want her to drop the EP immejiately (as in now), make sure you “like” her on Facebook via Team Sinah Downloads.

Dillon and Boog Brown have bumped fists to activate their dynamic MC skills in the form of super duo Martha Knuckles.  After collaborating a few times on songs and stage, the two Atlanta-based artists obviously figured they would be twice as nice as a group.  Since hearing their first single from the EP, I foresee good shit coming from this collab.  Check out the neck-breakin’ track below.

You can also help fund the group’s EP by heading over to Indiegogo and dropping them a little (or a lot of) bread.
